The concept at the core of this show is the unity of opposites, a fundamental impulse of creativity.

AbidA is an exhuberant festival of the senses where artforms and genres coalesce. Based on a traditional north African ritual, the performance consists of seven scenes: a rainbow of seven colours in dance, sound and music, poetry, song, imagery and fragrance. Each scene has its own particular ensemble of musicians and dancers. Adopting an experimental synaesthetic approach (the idea that one sense can be expeienced through another), the show presents and symbolises relationships and connections between senses, ideas and cultures. Embracing the earth and the heavens.

Seven paintings are projected in turn representing the colours white, black, blue, red, green, indigo and yellow with associated moods and emotions. Each scene has its own particular ensemble of musicians and dancers, it’s own particular fragrance and texture. The pairings are, of course, merely suggestive but based on the matchingss of experts in their fields after periods of consideration.

Adopting this synaesthetic approach, ‘AbidA’ presents relationships and connections between senses, ideas, cultures and art forms. The themes are explored in sound and movement and interactive visuals alongside the release of selected scents. The symmetry of the title reflects an integration of faiths, genders, and world views as the name is considered feminine in arabic yet masculine in hebrew to demonstrate how differences can be celebrated, reconciled and transcended.
