Programme Note
The poem, rich in natural symbolism, finds expression in a musical structure that reflects and reinforces the themes of the text inspired by the bracelet’s form. Many facets are evoked: openings and closures, freedom and containment, the sacred and the profane, the arc of life, stages in a journey. The blend of the vocal line and the piano texture, the use of dissonance and resonance, present a musical interpretation of the poem that is not intended simply to reflect but to, at times, collide or coalesce with the verse narrative in the subjective experience of a listener. The music, based on three intervals with pitches developed using different rotations, and the words conspire to inform the Lied with a sense of ambiguity and mystery.
